Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12
Driven by the creation and signing of Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card was adopted as the standard credential for federal employees and contractors for access to federal information systems and federally controlled facilities. The PIV card is a key element in implementing ICAM by assisting the Federal Government in moving towards strong authentication. This page provides federal agencies with information regarding policies, procedures, requirements, and purchasing HSPD-12 products. Specific PIV Card requirements are introduced in FIPS 201, a standard developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) in response to HSPD-12.
